Yabu Pushelberg Designs - Latest Design

In Shangai's Times Square, Yabu Pushelberg designed Lane Crawford's new China flagship store. Till date, this is the largest and luxurious retail store designed covering 150,000 square feet land spanning four floors.

The colour scheme that has been chosen is neutral with mild shades of blues and purples, burnt orange.

"Base materials such as English onyx and limestone, chosen for their beautiful grain and warm tones, carry a common element across all four levels, while champagne coloured chain mail cascades down the walls and voids, unifying the vertical space. This motif is further developed into a rain pattern, rendered in specialty paint and mother of pearl, which evolves in mood and scale from floor to floor."

It is designed from shoppers view point. Vertical circulation gives an element of surprise to shoppers at every step. Artist Hirotoshi Sawada work is also installed at the counters.

How commercial retail design can benefit retail stores?

Commercial Retail Design
Shopping Ambience
An ambience where shopping is a delight and wonderful experience. It is a a high end sophisticated atmosphere to soothe the senses and create a feeling of joyfulness and peaceful time spent for good quality time with friends, relatives and colleagues. It is the latest trend in creating a clean space for enjoyable shopping experience. For example, a bookstore requires ample shelves to accommodate several books on different topics under various subjects. A clothing space requires wide area for the goods and products to be displayed in eye catching manner.
Interior Decoration
Interior design plays a vital role in the elevation of the product or goods that are displayed for the customer to get a better feel of the goods in an attractive context. The managing of positions for attractive lighting and the type of lights with different colour shades is what retail designing all about. The architecture and the emphasis on merchandise promotional sales is the high point of a good interior design given to a shopping mall and the several stores that are a part of it.
Large Window Spaces
The billboards play an important role in drawing the shoppers into the showroom. The attractive display with the latest eye catching colours used in them is an added asset to any conceptual design space. The employment of large windows as spaces of advertising the goods in a wide angle display is the catch point that gives the buyer an idea of what is inside the store and persuades them to enter the mall and enjoy a productive purchasing solution.

Shopping Centre
The first name given to a commercial shopping space is the shopping centre. The idea of commercial retail design began with the intent of benefiting suburban families. Later, it developed into boutiques where clothing and fashion footwear were sold along with inner garments and make up kits. The increase in jobs and pay packets increased the spending capacity of the consumer that ushered a new era of retail design shopping spaces across the globe.

Internet Marketing
The World Wide Web threw the doors open enticing the shopper to do shopping with the click of a button by saving much time and easy access to several latest brands and designs in various parts of the world. Thematically, commercial retail design entered the domain of internet marketing even for non-conventional products where retail design can be used in a profitable manner. The successful circulation of business where design concepts are given a new look from time to time is the requisite for a good merchandise purchase with a complete satisfying shopping thrill and excitement. The key to any commercial space success is the natural lights that complement the interiors.

What is Retail Design?

Retail design is a commercial discipline that mixes various distinct fields of expertise together in the construction of retail space and design. It is a specific interior design and practice of architecture; nevertheless it incorporates components of ergonomics, industrial design, interior decoration, graphic design, and advertising.

The following are the six basic circulation plans and store layouts that all furnish a different experience:
  1. Straight plan: It divides transitional areas from one part of the store to the other by utilising walls to display merchandise. It leads the user to the back of the store. This design can be utilised for a variety of stores ranging from pharmacies to apparel.
  2. Pathway plan: It is most suitable for large stores that have single stage. In this plan there is a path that is unobstructed by shop fixtures, this smoothly guides the user all around the store.
  3. Diagonal plan: It uses perimeter design which causes angular traffic flow and the cashier is in a central location and easily available. This plan is most suited for self service retail stores.
  4. Curved plan: It aims to make an intimate environment and there is an emphasis on the structure of the space including the walls, ceiling and a corner this is achieved by creating the structure curved and is increased by circular floor fixtures.
  5. Varied plan: In this plan attention is drawn to particular centre areas, in addition to having storage areas that line the wall. This is best suited for jewellery and footwear retail stores.
  6. Geometric plan: It utilises the racks and the retail floor fixtures to make a geometric floor plan and circulation movement. By letting down parts of the ceiling certain areas can make defined retail spaces and this is well suited for appeal stores.

Ignite Retail - Aston Martin Case Study

IGNITE DESIGN LTD is one of the leading retail design agencies with offices in London (Head Office) and Beijing.

A recent design success is the newly opened retail space in Harrods for the bespoke international silversmith Grant MacDonald and their exclusive new luxury range - Silver by Aston Martin.

Given the Silver Room is full of shiny metal products predominantly displayed on black gloss units, the challenge we faced was to create a real point of difference and make the products the hero. So firstly, we took our Inspiration from both art installations and museum displays of rare & priceless artefacts that give space and gravitas to each individual object”, says Paula Dowie, Managing Partner at Ignite.

The finished environment had to “look gorgeous” says Paula. “And everything we designed had to exude quality. Secondly, it was highly important to create an environment which would enhance the very shiny gold & silver products; so we selected materials to perfectly compliment the expertly crafted products on display. A combination of depth, dimension, matt lacquered finishes, laminates and the subtle use of the iconic Aston Martin logo, together with the department’s generic gold wall backdrop, all come together to present a story of traditional yet contemporary, highly exclusive craftsmanship.”

We created a Simplistic Architectural approach to presenting the products using modular cubes rather than glass shelves which creates a more unique display environment and allows merchandising versatility, says Dominic Plumb, Ignite’s Creative Director.

He continues “intentionally selected subtle changes in texture and finish work with the Aston Martin ethos of quality engineering & style giving visual definition and luxury - while keeping the overall retail display as a backdrop in order to enhance  the silver and gold products”.
As well as creating a luxury and fluid environment, the carefully considered design allowed for manufacturing against a tight budget and deadline, whilst conforming to the new Harrods environmental guidelines.
Our clients were delighted with our design work and detailed assistance throughout the manufacturing process,” adds Paula.

ZEISS focuses on Manchester lens wearers

Mancunian wearers of contact lenses and glasses will find it almost impossible to ignore the health and performance advantages of asking their opticians for ZEISS lenses as a result of a multimedia campaign created by Ignite Retail Design.

Using Manchester as a test bed, ZEISS approached Ignite Retail Design to create a consumer campaign that would explain the health and performance benefits of specifying professionally engineered eyewear from a world-leading manufacturer.

Ignite Retail Design’s objective is to generate awareness for ZEISS lenses at its point of sale and in media inhabited by its key consumers. The communication challenge is explained by Paula Dowie, Managing Partner, Ignite Retail Design. “Generally people are only focused on selecting the frame and completely leave the decision of the lens to the optician. However, when you think that you only have one pair or eyes and just how precious they are – being more aware of the type of lens is extremely important!

So we have created and executed an external media campaign and in-store point of sale support aimed at getting people to think about their lenses and to ask specifically for ZEISS lenses to get the best from their specs.”

The message is being conveyed by high-profile 48 sheet and 6 sheet posters around Manchester and in the Arndale shopping centre, lead and mid-page banners on strategic websites accessible by PC’s, laptops and mobiles, plus a cinema commercial produced by the design company.

To further explore Ignite Retail Design’s creative and flexible approach to all in store design and retail promotions, contact Paula Dowie direct on 020 8876 7972 or email her at paula.dowie@igniteretail.com.

In Store Design - Ignite Retail

IN-STORE COMMUNICATION
Ignite Retail's 75% of purchase decisions are made in-store.  Which is why Brand communication in store is particularly crucial because it takes place at a pivotal stage in the journey towards the brand purchase decision, with the ultimate goal being to influence that decision.
However, the store actually plays a very different role in relation to brand communication. While the consumer is exposed to holistic, multi-layered communication which accumulates over time, shopper exposure is rapid and transitory, relying heavily on visuals and symbols.
As such, it is no surprise that consumer communication is used to create brand equity with consumption needs defining a brand’s positioning and communication route. In addition however, shopper communication can be used to elicit and support that brand equity. In this instance, the key task is to identify the best connection points to trigger a consumer response.

In store touch points
Many types of shopper communication are available to support the brand in store: POS signs, displays, in-store design etc and these are unique to retail.
As well as facilitating the search and selection process, shelf space, placement and signage can all play a role in positioning and supporting the brand.
And of course, the pack itself is a vital brand connection point. It plays an important but quite different role for consumer and shopper. For the consumer, it is integral to consumption. For the shopper, it is integral to communication, driving awareness and visibility, triggering brand identity and communicating specific messages.
In order to optimise brand performance, it is crucial to select the right contact points in store and maximise the brand connections which take place. To achieve this, one must understand how to:
- ensure shoppers actually look at a brand and its communication
- harness shopper behaviour
- motivate shoppers to buy

What is clear is that in-store communication will become increasingly crucial for brand success and that considering this from early stage product development will become a priority.

Importance of Retail Design

Now, more than ever, Retail design involves more than just creating the physical space in which the goods are sold. Retail design encompasses an understanding of what will work aesthetically in a retail environment and includes tangible elements (fixtures / communication / materials) and intangible design elements (the atmospherics and ambience), as well as including how the store will perform functionally and commercially, what the brand objectives are, how customers will interact with the brand and delivering the new design to an agreed budget.

Importance of Retail Design

For any business customers are important. Retail design is a key element to draw customers to the shop. With the large windows outside, it helps to catch attention of the passers by and give them the idea of the product inside.

A creative and professional retail designer must create an astounding experience for the customers by using the space to the maximum that will charm the customers to purchase goods.

 Visit Ignite Retail website or give us a call at + 44 (0) 20 8875 2341.

What is Conceptual Design? - Ignite Retail

Today’s consumers expect and demand more than just the product itself – and their wants have a bigger appetite than their needs. It is also accepted that, acting on a conscious and sub-conscious level, the physical retail space can have as much effect upon the consumers’ perceptions of a brand / store as the quality of the goods themselves. So, as a result, brands and stores are increasingly committed to creating a slice of retail theatre when translating the brand to the instore environment.

When we create instore designs for our clients, we work with them to assess what the new instore design needs to achieve. Frequently, “flexibility, modularity & WOW factor” are vital requirements of the brief.

Our point of difference is that we always look at the retail design from the customers’ point of view and marry that with the brand’s business objective, whilst ensuring own able innovation. And we do this regardless of the size of the site – whether it’s for a 1m unit or an entire new environment – so maximum customer engagement is reached.

Part of looking at the customers’ point of view is that we ensure we understand what customers need in order to enjoy the shopping experience more. So, starting with the current issues / barriers we eventually reach the understanding of what will enable a customer to be more comfortable in the new surroundings and therefore come back time and time.
