New Technologies in Waitrose in Swindon branch...

Customer's convenience while shopping in any retail store is of prime importance. Be it any clever retail or in store designs or innovative technologies, the main purpose is to display the best to the customers.

The Swindon branch of waitrose which opened last month has installed new innovations and best in store systems. This branch has various tablet stations for the customers that would help them to discuss and decide what to buy along side the help from staff.

"Speaking last week at the grocer's new Swindon store, Price argued that Waitrose is "competing on all of these fronts" and said that his business is "going to be everything the discounters aren't" as it looks to continue increasing sales and its market share in the coming months."

Importance of interior design for a retail store

A good retail design is not by chance.  It requires research, understanding, experience and constant evaluation.  An appropriate design attracts to the mind and the heart and it increases customers preferences.  We believe interior design of a retail store is the creation of visual signals that convey what a brand stands for and distinguishes it in people's memory.
The interior design of retail store creates the constraints of overall design often the spaces already exists and have had many prior uses.  It is at this stage logistics must be determined, structural features like columns, stairways, ceiling heights, windows and emergency exists all must be fractured into the final interior design.  In retail all the available space must be utilised and have a purpose.
The floor plan creates the circulation which is very important in in store design because it ensures that the consumer moves through the store from front to back guiding them to important displays and in the end to the cashier.

6 basic retail design insight:

i) Straight Plan - This plan devise transitional areas from one part of the store to the other by using walls to display  merchandise.  It also leads the consumer to the back of the store.  This design can be used for a variety of stores ranging from Pharmacies to Apparels.
ii) Pathway Plan -  This is most suitable for large stores that are single level.  In this plan, there is a path that is unobstructed by shop fixtures.  This smoothly guides  the consumer through to the back of the store.  This is well suited for Apparel department stores, as the clothes will be accessible.
iii) Diagonal Plan -  Diagonal Plan utilises perimeter design which cause angular traffic flow.  The cashier is in a central location and easily accessible.  This plan is most suited for self service retail store.
In interior design of a store once the overall structure and circulation of space has been determined, the atmosphere and thematics of the space must be created through lighting, sound, material and visual branding.  These interior design elements have the greatest  impact on the consumer and thus the level of productivity that could be achieved.

Ignite Retail - Aston Martin Case Study

IGNITE DESIGN LTD is one of the leading retail design agencies with offices in London (Head Office) and Beijing.

A recent design success is the newly opened retail space in Harrods for the bespoke international silversmith Grant MacDonald and their exclusive new luxury range - Silver by Aston Martin.

Given the Silver Room is full of shiny metal products predominantly displayed on black gloss units, the challenge we faced was to create a real point of difference and make the products the hero. So firstly, we took our Inspiration from both art installations and museum displays of rare & priceless artefacts that give space and gravitas to each individual object”, says Paula Dowie, Managing Partner at Ignite.

The finished environment had to “look gorgeous” says Paula. “And everything we designed had to exude quality. Secondly, it was highly important to create an environment which would enhance the very shiny gold & silver products; so we selected materials to perfectly compliment the expertly crafted products on display. A combination of depth, dimension, matt lacquered finishes, laminates and the subtle use of the iconic Aston Martin logo, together with the department’s generic gold wall backdrop, all come together to present a story of traditional yet contemporary, highly exclusive craftsmanship.”

We created a Simplistic Architectural approach to presenting the products using modular cubes rather than glass shelves which creates a more unique display environment and allows merchandising versatility, says Dominic Plumb, Ignite’s Creative Director.

He continues “intentionally selected subtle changes in texture and finish work with the Aston Martin ethos of quality engineering & style giving visual definition and luxury - while keeping the overall retail display as a backdrop in order to enhance  the silver and gold products”.
As well as creating a luxury and fluid environment, the carefully considered design allowed for manufacturing against a tight budget and deadline, whilst conforming to the new Harrods environmental guidelines.
Our clients were delighted with our design work and detailed assistance throughout the manufacturing process,” adds Paula.

Brands only benefit from seamless integration of technology - Ignite Retail

Retailers and brand owners must never lose sight of the fact that there are only three reasons to use technology in store: to drive product sales, improve customer communications and enhance brand image.

It is the job of the visual merchandiser to seamlessly integrate technology into the brand proposition and this according to retail guru Paula Dowie, Managing Partner of Ignite Retail Design, requires as much creative thought as all other elements of counter design.

We are all excited about where technology could take retailing but we cannot afford to stand back and admire it simply for what it is,” says Paula. “It can therefore never be a question of just putting a screen on a wall and thinking job done. Instead the use of technology can only be justified where it adds value to a specific retail sales operation.

This fits in very well with my ‘aisle to armchair’ approach to retail design,” continues Paula. “By this I mean that a customer’s expectations of a brand are sustained throughout the communication process. The relevance of the high-tech visual images contained with a TV commercial, for instance, must also be translated into the brand environment in-store to ensure there is no disconnect at any stage of a customer’s experience.”

Having over 20 years experience working with leading international brands, multiple retailers and top spas including L’Oreal, Procter & Gamble, Selfridges, Marks & Spencer and Urban Retreat,as well as developing the retail businesses of niche products and independent salons, Paula and her team at Ignite have a thorough understanding of what works in store.
